“From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work” (Ephesians 4:16, NRSV).
When you think of worship, what comes to mind? Do you immediately hear your favorite hymn, a choir anthem or perhaps, the preaching of the Word? Whether it be music, prayer, the Scripture reading or Holy Communion, all these things come together to form a worship service. Knowingly, then, it is essential to keep in mind that no part of the worship service should be thought of as more important than another part. For example, a worship service does not build up to the sermon, as if it were the pinnacle of worship; rather everything is intended to work together for the glory of God. Therefore, when we gather together for worship, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God” (Colossians 3:16, NSRV).
